Today, Oklahoma Women in Sports are more prominent
than ever. Beginning in the 1930's and 40's Jo Darrow
stands out when in 1942-44 she took the title of Outstanding
Woman Athlete at Central State University for her
achievements in basketball. She went on to play with the
All American Hill Billies and the Redheads.
Earlene "Beans" Risinger was Oklahoma's star
representative in the AA Girls Professional Baseball
League (The League of Their Own) pitching for
the Grand Rapids Chicks from 1948 - 1954.
Patti Cox Hampton became the first General
manager in Professional Baseball in 1977
when she became GM for the OKC 89ers.
The most decorated woman athlete
from Oklahoma is Shannon Miller,
winning 7 Olympic medals between 49
National medals. Shannon is from
Edmond.
Oklahoma women pro golfers include:
Nancy Lopez, Susie Maxwell Berning and
many others.
Oklahoma is proud of National Champions in
softball and basketball and we have interesting
exhibits to show off the extensive participation
of Oklahoma Women in Sports.
